In 1921, for the first time an aerodrom was built in Adelaide, Australia over 24 hectares. At this time the communication was confined only between Adelaide and Sydney. Gradually, a need was felt for the construction of an airport to facilitate the communication between Adelaide, which is the capital of South Australia and the other Australian cities.

The result was the establishment of Parafield Airport in the year 1927. However Parafield Airport was unable to meet the growing demands. Finally from 1947 a search began for the plot where an entirely new airport could be built. The plot near West Beach was selection and the construction work began. The place was earlier one of the plots used as market gardens. The wetland of Patawalonga Creek was also situated here.

On 16 February, 1955, the inauguration of the Adelaide Airport took place. At present Adelaide Airport, the chief of the airports in Adelaide offers service to nearly 8.5 million people on an yearly basis.

The new terminal needed further reconstruction as though initially the airport rendered valuable service yet it could not meet the growing needs. There was a proposal for construction of larger terinal which could bear the burden of flights at both domestic and international level. The reconstruction of the Adelaide airport was done under the supervision of Hansen Yuncken in the year 2005.

The then Prime minister of South Australia John Howard inaugurated the new terminal of Adelaide Airport on 7th October 2005. As the number of the fuel pumps and the underground pipes available in Adelaide Airport was insufficient hence this terminal came to be used for the international flights only. Since there was not enough space to enable the flights both domestic and international to refuell here in Adelaide Airport hence the domestic flights have to use the old terminal. The new terminal of this airport which is supposed to be one of the major airports in Adelaide is meant for the international flights only.
