There are two chief airlines operating in Adelaide which deserves special mention. The Ansett Airlines offered service from the year 1959 till the year 1986. However there was also an independent airline that was in operation from 1987 to 2005.

The Airlines of South Australia (ASA) came under the Ansetts in the year 1959. The ASA acted as the substitute for the Guinea Airways. From 1960 onwards the ASA was the chief means of communication between Adelaide and Port Lincoln, Ceduna, Cowell, Kimba, Broken Hill, Kangaroo Island, Woomera, Radium Hill, Port Pirie, Renmark, Cleve, Whyalla, Mildura. However there were additions and alterations. Queensland, Naracoote, Hayman Island, Millicent were added to the list whereas communication between some airports were no more available. Piaggio P 166 and Fokker F-27 begin rendering their services.

The name of Airlines of South Australia changed to Ansett Airlines of South Australia (AASA) in 1968. From the middle of 1970s the AASA had special flights during the weekends. Numerous people took the service of these flights to spend weekends in several places especially Mount Gambier. AASA also offered the service of some chartered flights from 1979. In the following year, the AASA entered into an agreement with Rossair regarding a particular route which was to be shared by both.

From 1981, once again the old name of Airlines of South Australia (ASA) once again came to be used. In the following years ASA received tough competition from Kendell Airlines. By September 1986, it was decided that the service of ASA would be discontinued. In June 1986, ASA had its last flight to Whyalla.

However in 1987, ASA came back again as one of the chief airlines operating in Adelaide. The airlines began its operation between Adelaide and Port Lincoln, Port Augusta, and also Kingscot. There were also chartered flights who were the chief modes of communication between numerous cities. At this time ASA along with Emu Airwaysand Airnorth formed a part of the Regional Link Airlines.

Later on Lincoln Airlines and Augusta Airways merged to provide better services. From 1997, ASA, the main airlines operating in Adelaide came into full fleged operation.

Finally in October 2003, the Emu Airways, ASA and Airnorth merged and became a part of the Regional Link. The reputed company Capiteq Group was the owner of the Regional Link. Later on the Capiteq Group took the decision of discontinuing the service of ASA and Emu Airways and this came to be effective from 9th of November 2005. With this an entirely new airlines with the name of Qantas Link emerged.
